Staying Hungry for God: Desire His Presence (Part One)

One of the greatest dangers a believer can face is not persecution, opposition, or even temptation. It is losing the desire for God.

A heart that no longer longs to pray, worship, or spend time with the Lord is a heart in need of spiritual renewal. The good news is that God invites us to know Him and draw near to Him. Throughout Scripture, we see the blessing of seeking Him with a sincere heart.

The greatest blessing of the Christian life is not simply what God can give us. It is knowing Him personally.

Psalm 63:1 says:

“O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.”

David wrote these words while in the wilderness. He was in a place of discomfort and uncertainty, yet his deepest longing was not for comfort, security, or even the restoration of his position. His soul thirsted for God.

David understood something we can easily forget: nothing in this world can satisfy the deepest longing of the human soul like God Himself.

Jesus also spoke about spiritual hunger when He said, “God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6). A spiritually hungry heart is one that desires what is right before God and refuses to become satisfied with a life lived apart from Him.

So how do we cultivate that hunger?

First: Seek God Earnestly

Spiritual hunger does not develop by accident.

David said, “I earnestly search for you.” His pursuit of God was intentional. He made knowing God a priority even when his circumstances were difficult.

Our relationship with God should never be reduced to a Sunday experience or an occasional prayer when life becomes difficult. We are invited into a daily relationship with Him.

That means making room for prayer. Opening His Word. Worshipping Him. Sitting quietly before Him. Asking questions. Listening. Returning to Him throughout the day.

A hungry heart makes time for God.

Jeremiah 29:13 says, “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” While this promise was originally spoken to Israel in a specific context, it reveals an important truth about the heart of God: He desires sincere, wholehearted devotion.

So begin each day with a simple question:

“Lord, how can I know You more today?”

Second: Satisfy Your Soul in His Presence

Every person carries an inner longing that the things of this world cannot fully satisfy.

Careers, achievements, possessions, relationships, entertainment, and success can bring moments of happiness, but they cannot become the ultimate source of our fulfillment.

David compared his desire for God to the thirst of a traveler in a dry and weary land. Just as water is essential for physical life, our relationship with God is essential to our spiritual life.

There is a satisfaction that comes from knowing God, walking with Him, and becoming aware of His presence that cannot be replaced by what the world offers.

This is why spiritual growth is not simply about knowing more Bible facts. A growing believer is becoming more aware of their need for God and developing a deeper desire to know, trust, and follow Him.

The question is not simply, “How much do I know about God?”

It is also, “How much do I desire God?”

Stay Hungry

Spiritual hunger must be cultivated.

If you find yourself becoming less interested in prayer, worship, Scripture, or fellowship with God, do not simply accept it as normal. Return to Him. Make room for Him again. Ask Him to renew your desire for His presence.

Today, choose to seek Him earnestly. Make knowing Him a priority. Let your heart become hungry for what only He can provide.

Because the more we learn to desire God Himself, the more we discover that He is not simply the One who gives us good things. He is the One our souls were made to know.
