Can a Christian Be Too Busy?

We live in a culture that rewards hustle, celebrates full calendars, and constantly pushes us toward “more.” But in the middle of all the noise, many believers find themselves overworked, overwhelmed, and spiritually undernourished. As Christians, we must pause and ask—can we become too busy for God?

Romans 12:2 warns us not to conform to the patterns of this world, but to be transformed by renewing our minds. That transformation begins when we resist the pressure to keep up with society’s relentless pace and instead lean into God’s rhythm of grace, rest, and relationship.

Even Jesus, during His time on earth, made it a priority to retreat and rest. In Mark 6:31, He tells His disciples, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” If the Son of God took time to pause, how much more should we?

One of the clearest pictures of misplaced priorities is found in Luke 10:38–42, where Martha busily prepares while her sister Mary sits at Jesus' feet, listening. Jesus gently corrects Martha, reminding her that only one thing is truly necessary—and Mary had chosen it. We often identify more with Martha—caught up in to-do lists and responsibilities—while missing sacred moments with God.

Busyness, even when cloaked in good intentions, can rob us of what matters most: time in prayer, study of the Word, and deep personal connection with God. If we’re always running, we won’t be still enough to hear His voice.

Isaiah 55:6 urges us, “Seek the Lord while He may be found; call on Him while He is near.” The truth is, God is near—but are we still enough to notice?

Let’s challenge ourselves to step off the hamster wheel of busyness and choose what is better. Like Mary, let’s sit at the feet of Jesus, unhurried and fully present.
