The Cure for Discouragement

In our previous post, we explored the meaning of discouragement—a feeling of unhappiness that arises when we lose confidence in our own abilities, in God's reliability, or in the power of the gospel. Discouragement can also stem from dissatisfaction with the past, distaste for the present, and distrust of the future. We also identified four common causes of discouragement: fatigue, frustration, failure, and fear.

Today, we’re diving into the cure for discouragement.

The Bible offers us a powerful example through the story of Nehemiah. Nehemiah led the people of Jerusalem in rebuilding the city’s walls. But halfway through the project, the workers grew discouraged and wanted to quit. They faced the same four causes of discouragement we often encounter: fatigue, frustration, failure, and fear. Yet Nehemiah knew exactly how to address these challenges. His response can serve as a blueprint for us when we feel weighed down by discouragement.

Here’s Nehemiah’s cure for discouragement:

1. Rest Your Body

Don’t be ashamed or afraid to take a break. Rest isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a strategy for greater effectiveness. If you’re burning the candle at both ends, you won’t shine as brightly as you think.

Jesus invites us to find rest in Him. In Matthew 11:28-30, He says:"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

When we take time to rest, we recharge our bodies and spirits, ready to face whatever comes next.

2. Pray for Restoration

Sometimes discouragement comes because we need restoration—whether it’s physical healing, emotional restoration, or the renewal of joy in our walk with God.

God promises to heal our wounds. In Jeremiah 30:17, He says:"I will give you back your health and heal your wounds," says the Lord.

If you've lost the joy of your salvation, ask God to restore it. Psalm 51:12 reflects this desire:"Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you."

God also promises to strengthen and restore us in His time. In 1 Peter 5:10, we read:"In His kindness, God called you to share in His eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So, after you have suffered a little while, He will restore, support, and strengthen you, and He will place you on a firm foundation."

When you’re discouraged, pray for God’s restoration—body, mind, and spirit.

3. Remember That God Will Help You

You are not alone in your struggles. God is with you, and He is ready to help. Psalm 54:4 declares:"But God is my helper; the Lord is the one who sustains me."

When you feel weak, remember that God is your strength. Psalm 28:7 says:"The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him."

Isaiah 40:31 reminds us of God’s promise to renew our strength:"But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."

When you feel discouraged, lean into God's help and trust that He will renew your strength.

4. Resist Discouragement

Discouragement is not a sentence; it’s a choice. If you feel discouraged, remember that you have the power to choose a different perspective. No one is forcing you to stay in that place.

It’s easy to get stuck in discouragement, but don’t give in. Do what’s right, even when your emotions tell you otherwise. Discouragement won’t last forever. Galatians 6:9 encourages us:"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (NIV)The New Living Translation puts it this way:"So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up."

Stand firm, trust God’s timing, and watch as He works all things out for your good.

Conclusion

If you're feeling discouraged today, remember that rest, restoration, God's help, and resisting the urge to quit are powerful tools for overcoming discouragement. With God's strength and guidance, you can face any challenge and rise above any obstacle. Don’t give up! Stand firm, and trust that He is at work in your life.
