C.S. Lewis once said, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.” But from a biblical perspective, humility is more than modest thinking—it’s about seeing ourselves rightly in light of who God is. It’s recognizing our complete dependence on Him, acknowledging His greatness, and aligning our hearts accordingly.
Humility is not weakness; it’s worship. It’s not self-hatred; it’s God-centeredness.
Why Humility Matters to God
God doesn’t just suggest humility—He requires it.
“He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” — Micah 6:8
Humility draws us into deeper reverence for God and honest reflection about ourselves. It’s through humility that we understand the depths of our brokenness and the riches of God’s mercy.
“All our righteous acts are like filthy rags…” — Isaiah 64:6
Without humility, we resist repentance, refuse grace, and rely on ourselves. But when we humble ourselves before the Lord, we open the door to His presence—and His promises.
What Are the Rewards of Humility?
The Bible reveals several powerful rewards for the humble:
1. Divine Favor
“He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.” — Proverbs 3:34 (NIV)
God personally extends His grace to the humble. His favor rests on those who surrender their self-importance and seek His heart.
2. Riches, Honor, and Life
“Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.” — Proverbs 22:4 (NIV)
God doesn’t just bless the humble spiritually—He honors them practically. This promise points to fullness in every dimension: provision, purpose, and eternal life.
3. Wisdom
“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” — Proverbs 11:2
Pride clouds judgment, but humility opens the heart to correction, instruction, and insight. The humble are teachable—and the teachable grow in wisdom.
Final Thoughts
God’s message about humility isn’t about shrinking back—it’s about kneeling low so He can lift us up.
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” — James 4:10
If you want to experience God’s grace, hear His voice, walk in His purpose, and enjoy His blessings—start by humbling yourself before Him. The rewards are eternal.
