Motherhood has been a sacred part of God's design since the beginning of time. In Genesis 3:20, Adam named his wife Eve—“life-giver”—signifying her unique role in creation. Psalm 127:3 reminds us that children are “a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him.” Whether you're nurturing biological children, guiding spiritual sons and daughters, or mentoring the next generation, you are walking in a divine assignment.
Let’s take a closer look at a few remarkable mothers in Scripture and what they teach us about the heart of a godly mother.
Hannah – The Mother Who Prayed and Released
Hannah's deep yearning for a child led her to persistent prayer. Her story teaches us that motherhood begins not only with birth but with surrender. When God answered her prayer with Samuel, she honored Him by dedicating her son back to the Lord.
“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of Him.” — 1 Samuel 1:27
Naomi – The Mother-in-Law Who Mentored
Though Naomi faced deep personal loss, she nurtured and guided Ruth, her daughter-in-law. Through their bond, we see the beauty of spiritual motherhood, restoring hope and legacy through mentorship and love.
“Your people will be my people, and your God my God.” — Ruth 1:16
Mary – The Mother Who Believed and Obeyed
Mary was a young woman whose life was forever changed by God’s call. Her obedience and faith in the face of uncertainty reflect the courage it takes to mother with purpose. She nurtured the Savior, stood by Him in suffering, and exemplified unwavering trust in God.
“I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” — Luke 1:38
Marks of a Godly Mother
As we celebrate motherhood, here are three defining traits of a godly mother:
Faithful in Prayer“Pray without ceasing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Wise with Words“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” — Proverbs 31:26
Leads Her Children to Christ“I remember your genuine faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice…” — 2 Timothy 1:5
To every woman nurturing life in any form, thank you. Your love, your prayers, your wisdom, and your faith are shaping generations for God’s glory.
Happy Mother’s Day. You are walking in a holy calling.
