Doubt is something all Christians face at one time or another. The story of Doubting Thomas one of Jesus' twelve disciples offers both a warning and an encouragement for believers struggling with faith.

After Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, He appeared to His disciples to comfort them and proclaim His victory over death. However, Thomas was absent during this miraculous event. When the other disciples joyfully shared the news that Jesus had risen and visited them, Thomas refused to believe unless he saw physical proof. Despite witnessing Jesus’ miracles and hearing His prophecies for three years, he still doubted. The testimony of ten trusted disciples should have been enough, but Thomas wanted undeniable evidence.
Yet, when Jesus graciously appeared to him later, allowing him to see and touch His wounds, Thomas immediately declared in faith, “My Lord and my God.” Jesus accepted his belief but also offered a powerful message for all future believers: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
How Can We Avoid Doubting Like Thomas?
Turn to God in Prayer
When doubt creeps in, it may be God’s way of drawing us closer to Him. Instead of letting uncertainty shake our faith, we should take it as an opportunity to seek God more earnestly in prayer. He is always ready to strengthen those who call on Him.
Recognize the Spiritual Battle
Faith is constantly under attack. As believers, we are engaged in spiritual warfare, and doubt is one of the enemy’s favorite weapons. We must equip ourselves daily with the Word of God to counter the lies and uncertainties that threaten our faith.
Put on the Full Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-19)
Just as a soldier prepares for battle, we must strengthen our faith during seasons of peace so we are ready when trials come. Reading Scripture, meditating on God’s promises, and surrounding ourselves with a community of faith will fortify us against doubt.
Faith Over Fear
Unlike Thomas, we have two incredible gifts to help us stand firm in faith:
The Holy Spirit—God's presence dwelling within us, guiding and reassuring us.
The Written Word of God—The Bible provides unwavering truth and countless testimonies of God’s faithfulness.
By leaning on these gifts, we can overcome doubt and confidently follow Christ, trusting in His promises—even when we cannot see.
