Growth: How Giving Strengthens Faith (Part Four)

Malachi 3:10

"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing..."

Throughout Scripture, God connects giving with trust. In Malachi 3, He invites His people to experience His faithfulness in a very practical way. Giving is more than a financial act. It is an opportunity to grow in faith and discover that God always keeps His promises. Every act of generosity reminds us that our confidence is not in what we possess, but in the God who faithfully provides.

First: Giving Grows Our Dependence on God

Philippians 4:19

"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."

Faith grows when we learn to depend on God instead of ourselves. One of the ways He teaches us this is through giving. It challenges us to place our trust in Him rather than in what we can see, count, or control.

Every act of generosity requires faith. Whether we are tithing, supporting God's work, helping someone in need, or giving to advance His Kingdom, we are declaring that our security is found in God, not in our resources. Giving moves our faith beyond words and into action.

Throughout the Bible, God often called His people to take a step of faith before they saw His provision. The widow of Zarephath is a powerful example. Although she had only enough food for one final meal, she obeyed God's instruction through the prophet Elijah. As a result, God miraculously sustained her throughout the famine (1 Kings 17:8–16). God was not trying to take from her. He was revealing His faithfulness to her.

The same is true for us today. When we give with willing hearts, we discover that God is more than able to provide, sustain, and care for His children. Every act of generosity becomes another opportunity to witness His faithfulness.

Second: Giving Produces Spiritual Maturity

2 Corinthians 9:7

"God loveth a cheerful giver."

Generosity is one of the practical ways God shapes us to become more like Christ. Every time we give, we learn to let go of selfishness, overcome fear, and grow in faithful stewardship.

Giving also helps loosen the grip of materialism. If we are not careful, our possessions can quietly become the source of our confidence instead of God. Jesus spoke often about money because He understood that where our treasure is, our hearts will follow. Generosity helps keep our hearts focused on God's Kingdom and His priorities.

It also cultivates gratitude. As we become more generous, we become more aware of how much God has already done for us. Instead of dwelling on what we lack, we begin to appreciate His daily provision. Gratitude brings contentment, joy, and a deeper sense of peace.

Finally, generosity allows us to participate in God's work. Rather than watching from the sidelines, we become partners in what He is doing through His Church and in the lives of others. As we trust Him through giving, our faith becomes stronger, our character grows, and our relationship with Him deepens.

Giving is about far more than releasing resources. It is about growing in trust.

Each time we choose generosity, we take another step of faith. We learn that God is faithful, His promises are dependable, and His provision is always sufficient. The hand that opens in generosity often discovers a heart that is growing stronger in faith. As we continue to trust God with what He has entrusted to us, we become more mature disciples and more effective servants in His Kingdom.
